Hybrid jobs refer to a job model put in place to allow employees to work from home and sometimes, from the office too. While some organizations go completely remote with their jobs, other companies prefer to have their workers stroll into the office one or two times a week to get things done. Furthermore, considering the present cash crunch in the country, some organizations have shown empathy to their workers by giving them the grace to come to the office fewer times than usual depending on their preferences.
What type of job can be hybrid?
Hybrid jobs can apply to several companies hosting the following roles and skills:
UI/UX designer
Technical writer
Digital marketer
Software engineer
Customer service representative
Project Manager
Web developer
Graphics designer
Data analyst
Video Editor
Content strategist and many more
Several jobs can give you the opportunity to work hybrid; while this is true, it is also important to note that there are organizations with standards that may not accommodate the hybrid model.
Why Hybrid Jobs?
There are several reasons most companies adopt the hybrid system of working and some of these reasons include:
Reduces burden costs
When employees work from home on certain days of the week, it reduces commuting expenses and encourages them to spend less and save more. Better still, if they are not saving, this money can go into other pending expenses such as gas or electricity. For people who go to work in their cars, less commuting reduces the wear and tear on vehicles which directly means little or no expenses. On the flip side, companies also get to spend less on office data, electricity, and other maintenance expenses.
Promotes employee productivity and engagement
Usually, the hybrid work model aims to help employees achieve a better work-life balance. Some employees may jitter and be uncoordinated because they have things going on in their personal lives that they cannot incorporate into the work in the office, but when they are in the comfort of their homes, they have more control over their work and their personal lives. Also, on days employees do not have to go to work, the stress of commuting to work and getting other things done in between is cut off and they can be more productive. They can decide when to work and manage their workload as it suits them.
Workforce expansion
Before taking a job, some jobseekers may have decided that it's easier for them to come to the office a few times and work from home some other times. This gives organizations access to a wider range of talents, hence they hire people from different places to fill in the available positions. This can also help organizations build more inclusive teams because they are hiring individuals with different backgrounds and perspectives which can in turn yield a high level of creativity and effective projects within the organization.
Reduced employee turnover
Employees tend to stay longer in an organization when they are satisfied and happier. A good work-life balance can mean that workers are maintaining a healthy lifestyle and they would love to keep it that way. The idea of enjoying flexibility and less stress brings a sense of fulfillment to the workers and they are less likely to leave the company.
Downsides of Hybrid jobs
The disadvantages of hybrid jobs include the following:
Less teamwork
Some tasks require teamwork and on days where employees have to work from home, it may be hard to get work done because the responses may not come in as desired. Also, some people may fail to share their ideas in time which can drag the success of the project. While alternatives such as slack, zoom, and other technologies can be used to make the process smoother, it may not work as perfectly as meeting in person because some employees can come up with the excuse of having bad internet or other technical difficulties.
Discrimination may set in
Employees working out of the office on certain days may miss out on some important benefits and may take out their resentment on the in-office workers. If the organizations do not implement a strategy to find balance, discrimination may set in and affect the entire productivity.
Distractions
Some people find it hard to focus when they work from home; hence if they work from home more than they come to the office, there is likely to be slack in effectiveness and productivity. Distractions can include attending to home chores, and trying to multitask which can also eventually lead to low-quality work.
Drawback in promoting the company's culture
A company that is keen on promoting togetherness among employees may find it hard as some workers may be out of the office and coming back to connect with their colleagues after each on-and-off may be an entire chore. Apart from connecting with their colleagues, they may also have a hard time engaging with the organization's values from time to time.
